San Antonio Aguas Calientes daily huipil.
This post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two
well-matched white cotton panels. These panels are heavily decorated with supplementary brocade. The unique feature
of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the "marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns, as here. This
decoration is double supplementary weft brocade, with the design appearing equally on both sides. This type of
weaving is only done in this village. San Antonio A. C. huipils are widely considered the best-woven huipils among
the Maya of Guatemala and their style influences that of many nearby villages. This classic example is in excellent
condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at her tienda in the Mercado des
Artesanos in Antigua. (See Petronila's picture in our "Vendors" section.) W 70 x L 58 cm. (16-69) $ 320. OBO
