San Antonio Aguas Calientes daily huipl.

From the Dr. Richard P. Mandell collection.

This post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two very well-matched purple cotton panels. These panels are heavily decorated with supplementary brocade. The unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the "marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns, as here. This decoration is double supplementary weft brocade, with the design appearing equally on both sides. This type of weaving is only done in this village. San Antonio A. C. huipils are widely considered the best-woven huipils among the Maya of Guatemala and their style influences that of many nearby villages. This fine weaving is in excellent condition. W 73 x L 57 cm. (16-229) Was $280. Now $250 or best offer.
