San Antonio Aguas Calientes huipil.

This circa-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well matched maroon cotton panels that are decorated with supplementary brocade, primarily in rows of geometric patterns, a style associated with older examples. The head opening is trimmed with hand-embroidered chain stitch. The unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the "marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns, here just across the shoulders. This decoration is double supplementary weft brocade, with the design appearing equally on both sides. This type of weaving is only done in this village. Huipils from San Antonio A. C. are often considered the best-woven huipils among the Maya of Guatemala and the prestige of their style influences that of many nearby villages. This fine example is in every good condition. It was acquired from Aguamarina Mateo Rosales at her stall in Tinamit Maya, near that of her mother, Juana, on Calle Santander in Panajachel. W 70 x L 66 cm. (15-89) Was $140. Now $120 or best offer.
