San Antonio Aguas Calientes daily huipil. W 81 x L 139 cm opened. This post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on
a back strap loom in two black cotton base panels. These panels are well matched and fully decorated with
elaborate supplementary brocade in floral patterns. The unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the
"marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns. This decoration is double supplementary weft brocade,
with the design appearing equally on both sides. This type of weaving is only done in this village. San Antonio
A. C. huipils are widely considered the best woven huipils among the Maya of Guatemala and their style influences
that of many nearby villages. This huipil is as fine a modern example as we have seen. It is in excellent
condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Artesanos market in Antigua who said it was one of
her own. Petronila only wears the best. (See Petronila's picture in our "vendors" section.)
(11-63) Was $ 400. Now $ 280. OBO
