San Antonio Aguas Calientes faja – woman’s sash. W 7 x L 260 cm plus ties. This circa-1980 faja was hand woven on a back strap loom in cotton. It features warp patterns depicting plants and fish. These belts are now being replaced in San Antonio Aguas Calientes by a style that incorporates the double supplementary weft brocade of their huipils and, hence, examples such as this are increasingly uncommon. This fine example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Tomasa Calbó Mateo of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. (11-219) $65.
