San Antonio Aguas Calientes daily huipil. W76 x L112 cm opened. This post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a
back strap loom in two very well matched black cotton panels that are decorated with supplementary brocade. The
unique feature of San Antonio A.C. huipils is the "marcador" decoration, usually in floral and bird patterns.
This decoration is double supplementary weft brocade, where the design appears equally on both sides. This type
of weaving is only done in this village. San Antonio A. C. huipils are widely considered the best woven huipils
among the Maya of Guatemala and their style influences that of many nearby villages. Today, the wider the
“marcador” portion of the huipil, the more valuable it is. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was
acquired from Juana Mateo Rosales of Panajachel. (10-95) $ 220.
