Sacapulas is a Sacapulteco speaking town on the Chixoy River in the Department of Quiche, the only pllace the language is spoken. It has been famous for its salt production since pre-Columbian times, as a trade center and for the giant sacred ceiba trees that cover its market. “The ceremonial huipil of Sacapulas – with three panel construction, four-scalloped appliqué pattern around the neckline, and a mainly red banding pattern – resembles the daily huipil of northern Ixil-speaking neighbors in cut and layout of design.” (Conte, Maya culture & Costume, Taylor Museum, p. 56) However, the Sacapulas ceremonial huipil has not been produced for several decades. All examples are extremely rare.
