Quetzaltenango (aka, Xela) with a population of over 200,000 is the second largest city in Guatemala, although only a small fraction of the size of the capital. It is the capital of the department of the same name. It is the commercial hub of the western highlands, with roughly half of its population Quiche speaking Mayans. It is located in a broad valley surrounded by ten volcanoes. The typical daily huipil is of three foot treadle loomed panels joined by elaborate floral decorative seams. Most of the embroidered seams are done on simple sewing machines. Some, however, are hand embroidered. Quetzaltenango huipils are a common nationalized style, sold to Maya women all over the country.
