Panajachel is a Kaqchikel speaking town on the eastern shore of Lake Atitlán in the Department of Sololá. It is where the main highway descends from the departmental capital of Sololá to the shore of the lake and has, thus, become primarily a market and tourist town, often call “Gringotenango”. It is now filled with hotels, restaurants and shops. It is the hub of all activity around the lake with Maya from many nearby towns coming here to sell to tourists. The Panajachel traditional style, however, endures. The huipil has three panels, typically with a red base, the center panel more heavily decorated with supplementary brocade than the side panels. Panajachel was seriously effected by mudslides associated with Hurricane Stan in 2005 that destroyed approximately 100 homes.
