Nahuala daily huipil.

This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back-strap loom in two well balanced, warp-striped cotton panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. The blue base thread is the natural dye, indigo. The surface decoration is supplementary brocade in cotton and rayon (to mimic silk) with horizontal bans featuring the “compepe muerte” (aka, broken neck turkey) motif. I speculate that his motif has something to do with turkey being a festival food. It has the unique T-shaped head opening unique to Nahuala. This beautiful example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Sra. Maria Elena Matzar at her tienda on Calle Santander in Panajachel. W 81 x L 80 cm. (16-96) $ 140. OBO
