Nahualá vintage ceremonial huipil.
This exceptional pre-1970 huipil is very large for a
Nahualá huipil, characteristic of much older ones, and includes silk brocade indicating its ceremonial use. It
was hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with well
matched supplementary brocade featuring animal and plumed serpent motifs. The cotton base thread is finely hand
spun, typical only of much older Nahualá huipils. The silk brocade has subtly stained the surrounding white cotton,
an intentional design feature. This classic huipil is in very good condition, especially considering its
probable age, with a few small stains other than the intentional ones. The collar is in the t-shape traditional
in Nahualá. It was acquired from Maria Pol of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. W 118 x L 180 cm opened.
