Nahuala daily huipil. W 80 x L 154 cm opened. This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-balanced white cotton base panels. The panels are joined by a hand embroidered decorative seam and are decorated with supplementary brocade in cotton and rayon. This brocade features four large quetzal bird motifs on each side surrounded by other birds and animals. There are rows of small quetzals across the shoulders. The brocade was intentionally done in a non-color fast thread so as to bleed onto the white base. Here it has done so with relative subtly. The head and arm openings are trimmed by a hand embroidered buttonhole stitch. This unique example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Milagro Chavez at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua Guatemala. See Milagro's picture in our "Vendors" section. (11-44) $ 100.
