Nahualá vintage ceremonial huipil or a very fine copy.
This huipil is very unique in that
is exceptionally large for a Nahualá huipil and in a pre-1970 style, indicating possible ceremonial use. It was
hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with well-matched
supplementary brocade in the “petate” (reed mat) design incorporating human, bird, animal, universal diamond and
plumed serpent motifs. The cotton base thread is hand spun, typical only of some older Nahualá huipils. Yet, it
is in excellent condition. The collar is in the t-shape traditional in Nahualá. It was acquired from Petronila
Mendez Bocó at the Artesanos market in Antigua Guatemala. W 105 x L158 cm opened. (11-43) $ 150. OBO
