Momostenango huipil, very likely ceremonial. W109 x L140 cm opened. This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well balanced cotton panels. Momostenango style involves the creation of geometric patterns by the juxtaposition of ikat dyed weft threads. This technique is unique to Momostenango. This example is unusual in that its background color is green rather than the more typical red and it is very large, indicating ceremonial use. Momostenango huipils are becoming increasingly rare. This very fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Ema and Carmen Tepeu of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G). (9-30) $ 125. SOLD.
