Joyabaj huipil, probably ceremonial. W96 x L103 cm opened. This contemporary huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two predominantly red striped cotton blend base panels. The neck and arm holes are surrounded by hand embroidered circles of decoration typical of Joyabaj huipils. This huipil is thought to be ceremonial because of its relatively very large size and the extensiveness of the embroidery. There is no separate style of Joyabaj ceremonial huipil. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus. (10-35) $ 130.
