San Juan Comalapa wedding huipil. W90 x L127 cm opened. This post-1980 wedding huipil was hand woven on a back
strap loom in two white cotton base panels. It features horizontal bands of decoration in supplementary brocade
featuring geometric and floral motifs, with the chalice motif central. It has the red stripe across the shoulders
characteristic of traditional Comalapa huipils. The arm and head openings are trimmed with velvet. Comalapa
huipils on a cotton base are now uncommon. Wedding huipils are similar in size to the larger ceremonial huipils
and are also worn outside the skirt. This fine example is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Ana
Carolina Ajanel of Chichicastenango. (9-84) $ 150. Sold.
