San Juan Comalapa ceremonial (sobre) huipil.
This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom
in two wide and very well balanced cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with supplementary weft
brocade in horizontal bands of geometric, plant and zoomorphic patterns in a very typical Comalapa design.
A very small amount of this brocade in maroon is silk. The base seems to be composed of a mix of undyed,
hand spun (ixcaco) and commercial brown threads. The head and arm openings are trimmed with velvet.
This classic sobre huipil was worn over the regular huipil on ceremonial occasions such as weddings and
cofradia society functions. It is in excellent condition. It was acquired from
Sra. Sophia Monroy Tepeú at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua. W 99 x L 68 cm. (16-82) Was $260. Now $225 OBO.
