San Juan Comalapa vintage ceremonial (“sobre”) huipil.

From the Dr. Richard P. Mandell collection.

This huipil was hand woven in 1966 (it’s date is woven in the design) on a back strap loom in two very well matched white, hand spun cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with horizontal bands of supplementary brocade, several colors in silk. The red stripes across the shoulders are the most standard and distinctive traditional feature of Comalapa huipils. This classic sobre huipil was worn over the regular huipil at “cofradia” ceremonies, weddings and during other ceremonial functions. This exceptional example is in excellent condition. W 98 x L 61 cm. (16-221) $425. OBO
