San Juan Comalapa vintage daily huipil.

This circa-1960 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two brown cotton base panels, utilizing some hand spun thread. The surface decoration is supplementary weft brocade in horizontal bands. Red stripes across the shoulders, here with “estrellas”, are the most standard traditional feature of Comalapa huipils. This example is very well balanced. It is in good condition. The discoloration around the head and arm openings show where trim, probably black velvet, used to be. It was acquired from Juana Escalon at the “bomberos” market in Panajachel. W 79 x L 55 cm. (12-295) $ 90.
