San Juan Comalapa ceremonial (sobre) huipil.

This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two very well matched brown cotton base panels. The base thread is “ixcaco”, hand-spun, undyed, naturally brown cotton. These panels are decorated with horizontal bands of supplementary weft brocade, three colors in silk. Red stripes across the shoulders are the most standard traditional feature of Comalapa huipils. This classic sobre huipil was worn over the regular huipil at “cofradia” ceremonies, weddings and other ceremonial functions. This huipil is of the highest quality and in exceptional condition. It was acquired from Ema and Carmen Tepeu of San Pedro Sacatepequez (G)at the La Fuente market in Antigua Guatemala. W 98 x L 63 cm. (12-277) Was $650. Now $ 350. OBO
