Coban is the capital of the department of Alta Vera Paz. It founded in 1538. The Maya population speaks Kekchi. Many German residents came to the area in the late 19th century and founded orchid and coffee plantations. It is now a popular base for eco-tourism to the nearby rivers and lakes. Coban huipils are typically of three brocaded panels and short, featuring horizontal rows of animal and geometric motifs. Another common style in Coban is a white guaze cotton huipil. Also popular are Coban blusas featuring a lace like commercial fabric base with rows of hand embroidered flowers around the neck hole.
