Chuarrancho ceremonial huipil.

This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two forest green cotton base panels, an unusual base color. These panels are joined by a hand embroidered decorative seams and are decorated by dense and extensive supplementary brocade in horizontal bands featuring bird, animal and sacred cieba tree motifs. Across the shoulders is a band of facing S-curves surrounding corn plants, a duality symbol. The collar is trimmed with a thick embroidered chain stitch typical of Chuarrancho huipils. (“Densely brocaded patterns in purple and red are characteristic of the Chuarrancho ceremonial huipil. . . (O)pen down the sides . . .worn outside the skirt and covered with supplemental weft life forms”. . “Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 176). This fine example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Estefana Culajah of Patzun at the La Fuente market in Antigua. W107 x L144 cm opened. (8-300) $185. OBO
