Chuarrancho ceremonial huipil. (L130 x W99 cm opened) This circa 1980 Churrarancho huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two all cotton panels, joined in the middle by a hand embroidered decorative seam. This beautiful huipil features very dense, extensive and finely executed brocade in horizontal bands, primarily of animal motifs. Across the shoulders is a band of facing S-curves surrounding corn plants, a duality symbol. The head hole features an added hand embroidered collar typical of Chuarrancho huipils. “Densely brocaded patterns in purple and red are characteristic of the Chuarrancho ceremonial huipil. . . (O)pen down the sides . . .worn outside the skirt and covered with supplemental weft life forms”. . “Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 176. Collected from Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus.
