Chuarrancho vintage ceremonial huipil. W127 x L134 cm opened. This huipil is museum quality. It was acquired from the widow of Dr. Frederic Bartter. He bought it in 1942 while in Guatemala studying malaria for the US Army. It was old then. Hence, it is circa 1920’s or earlier. It was hand woven on a back strap loom in two wide white cotton base panels. It is believed to be made of hand-spun thread. The panels are very well matched. It is a classic Chuarrancho ceremonial huipil with all the traditional features, particularly the sacred cieba tree motifs. The collar is finished with an embroidered chain stitch. The weaving is extremely well done. This incredible huipil has some stains which we have not tried to remove, but is in remarkably good condition for its age. (10-370) $500. Sold.
