Chichicastenango men’s ceremonial head tzute.

This fine ceremonial men’s head tzute was hand woven on a back strap loom in two very well matched red cotton base panels with black stripes. These head tzutes are used in cofradía society functions. Authentic examples are rare. The supplementary brocade is in purple cotton and two colors of silk. The hand embroidered decorative seam is in the same colors and materials as the brocade. The brocade features 24 identical stylized animal figures. It has cotton tassels at each corner. It is in excellent condition. It is difficult to give an age to ceremonial pieces as they are often used only infrequently, however, this piece is estimated to be circa 1970. It was collected from Bonifacia Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus. W96 x L77 cm. (7-215) $ 350. OBO
