Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.
(W89 x L150 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This classic circa-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap
loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered
decorative seams. Silk in shades of maroon and magenta fading to pink is
extensively employed in both brocade and embroidery decoration. The center
panel is wider (35 cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels
(27 cm). The central decorative motifs are overlapping variations on the
plumed serpent design, bordered by floral bands on the side panels. The
typical sunburst collar is embroidered chain stitching in silk and cotton
over velvet and has especially long points. This ceremonial huipil is in
very good condition. Collected from Bonifacia Méndez Bocó of Santa Maria
de Jesus in Antigua Guatemala. (6-84)
