Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.
(W88 x L146 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This very fine post-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap
loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered
decorative seams. Silk in shades of maroon and magenta is extensively
employed in both brocade and embroidery decoration. The center panel is
wider (33 cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels (27.5
cm). The central decorative motifs are very highly abstract double-headed
eagles. These are surrounded by and incorporate plumed serpent and
universal diamond designs. The typical sunburst collar is embroidered chain
stitching in silk over velvet and has especially long points. This very
fine huipil is in almost like new condition. Collected from Maria Huarcas
Aigua of Chichicastenango. (6-81) $320 *SOLD*
