Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.
(W88 x L144 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This exquisite post-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap
loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered
decorative seams. All the decoration, both brocade and embroidery, is done
in old silk in shades of maroon and magenta. The center panel is wider (34
cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels (27 cm). The
central decorative motifs are vertical bands of alternating plumed serpent
and universal diamond designs. The typical sunburst collar is embroidered
chain stitching in silk over velvet. This very highest quality huipil is
in near perfect condition with only minor wear around the neck opening.
Collected from Anna Carolina Ajanel in Chichicastenango. (6-78) $900. Sold.
