Chichicastenango men's ceremonial (cofradía) jacket.
This fine men's cofradía jacket is hand woven by men on a special loom using hand spun, undyed black wool. Men also do the tailoring and embroidery. It is extensively decorated by hand embroidered flowers and chain stitch. The flowers on front and back are embroidered in magenta silk. It has a hand twisted cotton fringe in multiple colors off the back hem. According to Petersen (Maya of Guatemala, p. 93), the blue zigzag around the cuff and shoulders indicate that the wearer was an astrologist or day-keeper of the ceremonial Maya calendar. It measures 59 cm across the shoulders, is 51 cm long (without the fringe) and has 50 cm sleeves. Authentic Chichicastenango men's cofradía jackets in such excellent condition are rare. This fine piece was collected from Ema Tepeu of San Pedro Sacatepéquez in Antigua Guatemala. Can come with matching pants - not shown. (6-217) $300 *SOLD*
