Chichicastenango vintage ceremonial huipil. W93 x L138 cm opened. This circa-1950 vintage ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 white cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered multi-colored decorative seams, primarily of silk. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated than the side panels. The decoration is primarily in supplementary brocade, with the maroon background in silk and featuring floral motifs. The sunburst collar is in the older style unique to vintage Chichicastenango huipils and is hand embroidered with chain stitching in cotton and silk. It has two "lunas" on the shoulders representing the sun and moon. This huipil is and outstanding example and is in very good condition. It was acquired from Milagro Chavez of San Juan Sacatepequez .
