Chichicastenango vintage ceremonial huipil.
(W94 x L158 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This circa-1950 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 white cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered decorative seams. These are not, however, the original base panels which have been replaced as a repair. This new base has been intentionally stained with the colors from the silk. Silk in shades of maroon and magenta fading to pink is extensively employed in both brocade and embroidery decoration. The center panel is wider (36 cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels (29 cm). The central decorative motif floral on all panels surrounded by simple plumed serpent designs. This is a very early example of floral Chichicastenango ceremonial huipils. The typical sunburst collar and two shoulder "luna" medallions are embroidered chain stitching in silk over velvet, but seriously worn. This antique ceremonial huipil is in fair condition. Collected from Milagro Chavez of San Juan Sacatepéquez in Antigua Guatemala. (3-55) $260 *SOLD*
