Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.
(W83 x L144 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This classic circa-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered decorative seams. Silk in shades of maroon and magenta is extensively employed in both brocade and embroidery decoration. The center panel is wider (33 cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels (25 cm). The central decorative motif is floral. The typical sunburst collar is embroidered chain stitching in silk and cotton over velvet. Crochet decoration around the armholes is in fading older silk. This ceremonial huipil is in very good condition. Collected from Maria Huarcas Aigua of Chichicastenango. (3-147) $225 *SOLD*
