Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.
(W91 x L142 cm) The use of silk in a Chichicastenango huipil is traditionally associated with ceremonial use. This classic pre-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom
in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by multicolor hand embroidered
decorative seams. Silk in shades of maroon and magenta fading to pink is
extensively employed in both brocade and embroidery decoration. The center
panel is wider (35 cm) and more extensively decorated than the side panels
(28 cm). The central decorative motif is highly abstract double-headed
eagles on all panels. These are surrounded by and incorporate variations
on the plumed serpent design. The typical sunburst collar is embroidered
chain stitching in silk and cotton over velvet. This fine ceremonial
huipil is in very good condition. Collected from the late Tomás Rin of
Chichicastenango. (2-32) $240 *SOLD*
