Santo Tomás Chichicastenango vintage ceremonial huipil.

This fine 1950’s ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 hand-spun white cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered multi-colored decorative seams. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated than the side panels. The central decorative motif is floral. Much of the supplementary brocade decoration is in silk. The sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils and was hand embroidered with chain stitching in cotton and silk. This outstanding example is in very good condition. Acquired from Sr. Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua Guatemala. W 93 x L 76 cm. (16-164) $325. OBO.
