Santo Tomás Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.

This beautiful circa 1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three brown cotton panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade, all in silk, shaded from magenta to silver. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The central decorative feature is the highly abstract double-headed eagle motifs on each panel. The sunburst collar is hand embroidered in silk over velvet and unique to Chichicastenango huipils, here extravagantly offset in darker colors of silk. This exceptionally high quality huipil is in very good condition. It was acquired from Maria Pol of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. W 86 x L 67 cm. (15-230) $ 600. OBO
