Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil. This beautiful pre-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams in silk. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in silk, principally maroon. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The central decorative motif is the plumed serpent motif on each panel. The silk has faded subtly, an intentional design feature and indication of age. The sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils. This collar is hand embroidered in silk over velvet. This exceptionally high quality huipil is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Maria Huarcas Aigua of Chichicastenango. W 85 x L 70 cm. (12-274) $ 700.
