Chichicastenango men’s ceremonial head tzute.

This circa-1970 ceremonial men’s head tzute was hand woven on a back strap loom in two red cotton base panels with black warp stripes joined by a hand embroidered decorative seam. The panels are decorated with supplementary brocade is in purple and magenta cotton. The brocade features bird and animal motifs. Two of its four tassels aren’t original. Chichicastenango head tzutes are used in cofradía society functions. Authentic examples are rare. This example is in good condition. It is difficult to determine the age of ceremonial pieces as they are often used only infrequently, however, this piece is estimated to be circa 1970 or earlier. It was collected from Tomasa Calbo Mateo of Chichicastenango at the “bomberos” textile market in Panajachel. W 73 x L 71 cm. (12-265) $ 100. OBO
