Chichicastenango corte (women's wrap skirt).

This circa-1980 corte was hand woven on a foot treadle loom in two matching weft striped cotton panels attached by “randas”, hand embroidered decorative seams. Because of the use of silk in the “randas”, it probably was used ceremonially. It features complex ikat dye patterns and employs indigo dye. Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dying process similar to tie-dye. This fine example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó of Santa Maria de Jesus at her space in the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua Guatemala. The top photograph shows only half of the material. Typically, we sell cortes for yardage. W72 x L280 cm. (11-170) $85. OBO
