Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.

This pre-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade with the magenta and maroon in silk. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The central decorative motif is floral on each panel. The sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils and is hand embroidered, again primarily in silk. Although worn on the edges, this fine huipil is in very good condition. It was acquired from Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Artesanos market in Antigua Guatemala. See Petronila’s picture in our “Vendors” section. W 87 x L 126 cm opened. (11-10) $ 200.
