Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil. W 93 x L 141 cm opened. This beautiful circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 brown cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade, principally in magenta and maroon silk. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The central decorative motif is the double-headed eagle motif on each panel. The silk has faded subtly onto the surrounding cotton, an intentional design feature. The sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils and is hand embroidered, again primarily in silk. The collar has been trimmed with velvet. This very fine huipil is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Juanita Conos of Chichicastenango. (11-09) $ 320.
