Chichicastenango daily huipil. W86 x L124 cm opened. This circa-1980 ceremonial huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 black cotton base panels joined by hand embroidered multi-colored decorative seams. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated than the side panels. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade, featuring highly sylized double-headed eagle and plummed serpent motifs. The hand embroidered sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils and this example is particularly fine. The head opening is trimmed with velvet that is quite worn and has been opened for easier access. This fine huipil is in very good condition. It was acquired from Maria Guarcas Aigua of Chichicastenango. See Maria’s picture in our “Vendors” section. (11-06) $180. Sold.
