Chichicastenango vintage ceremonial (cofradia) huipil. W 91 x L 130 cm opened. This pre-1960 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in 3 white cotton base panels using hand spun thread. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated than the side panels. The supplementary brocade decoration is primarily in magenta silk and features very subtle and highly abstract double-headed eagle motifs. The hand embroidered sunburst collar is unique to Chichicastenango huipils. Older Chichicastenango huipils that incorporate silk are usually considered ceremonial items. However, there are two catagories of Chichicastenango ceremonial huipils. Most older Chichicastenango huipils with silk are in the same style as daily huipils and are considered ceremonial because they are the best a woman owns and typically are just worn at church, village fiestas and weddings. There is, however, a specific style that is used only at cofradia society events. Most examples of this cofradia style do not include silk. This huipil is quite old, in the cofradia style and primarily decorated with silk, making it quite exceptional. Overall, its condition is good. The silk has faded on to the white cotton base, usually an intentional design feature. Holes have been repaired in two places on one side panel. These repairs were well done. The collar has been opened for easier access. It was acquired from Ana Carolina Ajanel of Chichicastenango. (11-05) $ 360.
