Chajul vintage huipil. (L110 x W84 cm opened) “A clear bright red is the favored background color of the Chajul daily costume. Though the huipil is simpler in execution and design than those of Nebaj or San Juan Cotzal, it does have its own drama and presence. The weaving in Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or kneel. The above-mentioned birds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 108) This vintage huipil is typical of the traditional style worn in the 1960s. They are increasingly rare. It was hand woven on a back strap loom in two red cotton panels decorated by bird motifs. It is in very good condition. Collected from the Nim Po’t Collection of Antigua Guatemala. (5-258) $90 *SOLD*
