Chajul vintage daily huipil.

“A clear bright red is the favored background color of the Chajul daily costume. . . . The weaving in Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or kneel. (B)irds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 108) This circa-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-balanced, red cotton blend panels, a material known as “aleman” and prized for its softness and drape. This example is typical of the style worn in Chajul in the 1960-70’s. These huipils are increasingly rare. This example is in very good condition. It was acquired from Sra. Juana Mateo Rosales at her tienda in Panajachel. W 73 x L 50 cm) (21-86) $ 110 or best offer.
