Chajul vintage daily huipil.
“A clear bright red is the favored background color of the Chajul daily costume. . . . The weaving in
Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or
kneel. (B)irds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”,
Altman and West, p. 108) This huipil was hand spun on a back strap loom in two red cotton panels and is typical of the style worn in
Chajul in the 1960-70’s. Unusually well balanced. These huipils are increasingly rare. It is in very good condition. It was acquired
from an anonymous private collection in Guatemala. W 87 x L 59 cm) (18-59) $90. OBO
