Chajul daily huipil.

This pre-2000 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two green panels decorated by bird motifs. The base is “aleman”, a cotton/rayon blend prized for its drape. It is in very good condition. It was acquired from Ana Rivera of Chajul on Calle Santander in Panajachel. “The weaving in Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or kneel. (B)irds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 108) W 80 x L 64 cm. (17-61) $90. OBO
