Chajul vintage daily huipil.

“A clear bright red is the favored background color of the Chajul daily costume. . . . The weaving in Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or kneel. (B)irds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 108) This huipil is typical of the style worn in the 1960-70’s. They are increasingly rare. This fine example was hand woven on a back strap loom in two red cotton panels decorated by bird motifs. It is in excellent condition. Acquired from Sra. Petronila Mendez Bocó at the Mercado des Artesanos in Antigua. (W 90 x L 60 cm) (16-163) $125. OBO
