Chajul huipil. “A clear bright red is the favored background color of the Chajul daily costume. . . . The weaving in Chajul is especially firm and sturdy, and in order to achieve this, women usually stand at their backstrap looms rather than sit or kneel. (B)irds, corn plants, arrows and diamonds predominate in their bold style of single-faced brocade.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 108) This huipil is typical of the traditional style worn in the 1960s, but is newer. It was hand woven on a back strap loom in two red cotton panels decorated by bird and animal motifs. The base is “aleman”, a cotton/rayon blend prized for its drape. It is in very good condition. Acquired from Milagro Chavez at the La Fuente market in Antigua. W76 x L55 cm. (14-04) $90. OBO
