Almolonga tzute. (L92 x W60 cm plus tassels) “The Almolonga huipil is intricate and solidly brocaded above the waist. The most common design of the 1960s was a vertical zigzag in maroon, purple and orange-gold.” (Threads of Identity, p. 121) Almolonga tzutes are relatively small and are like samplers for the geometric brocade that decorates their huipils. Almolonga tzutes are hand woven by women on back strap looms and feature supplementary weft brocade. This tzute is all cotton and has a red, white and blue (indigo) base with simple ikat that is indicative of an older piece. This tzute is in very good condition, but with some obvious wear in the upper right corner. Collected from Ana Carolina Ajanel of Chichicastenango.
