Almolonga huipil. (L180 x W74 cm opened) “The Almolonga huipil is intricate and solidly brocaded above the waist. The most common design of the 1960s was a vertical zigzag in maroon, purple and orange-gold.” (Threads of Identity, p. 121) This post-1980 daily huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in two well-matched cotton panels. The supplementary brocade features horizontal bands of geometric, animal and letter motifs, including birds, butterflies and universal diamonds across the shoulders. The design elements are quite unique although within the typical Almolonga design repetoire. The base is solid red, typical for an Almolonga huipil. The collar and armholes are trimmed with velveteen. This fine huipil is in excellent condition. Collected from Maria Elena Batz of Patzun.
